Farmers Battle the Elements to Salvage Remaining Corn Crop
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 11/25/2014

Much lower temperatures and continuous accumulation of snow made the process of harvesting corn even more difficult during the past week. The Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service said in this week's crop report that overnight lows dipped into the single digits across southern Wisconsin and were well below zero in the north. However, variable frost depths in the southern districts meant some fields were too soft to support machinery.

Crop reporters say grain moistures remain high, which means drying facilities are having a difficult time keeping up with demand. Fall tillage was also at a near standstill due to frost and snow.

As of Sunday, corn for grain was 73 percent harvested with grain moisture at harvest averaging 21 percent. Ninety-five percent of soybeans had been harvested.

Winter wheat was 91 percent emerged, with the condition rated 66 percent good to excellent.

Fall tillage was finished for the season due to frozen ground and weather conditions, the report noted.
