Wisconsin Ag Groups Pleased with Farm Bill Provisions
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 12/12/2018

Several agricultural organizations were quick to respond to the Senate's passage of the 2018 Farm Bill on Tuesday, which passed on a 87-13 vote.

The Green Bay-based Edge Dairy Cooperative says the measure includes improvements for the dairy sector, such as the Dairy Margin Coverage, which improves upon the former Margin Protection Program by allowing simultaneous use of multiple risk management for all-size farms.

"When it comes to farmers protecting our businesses, one size doesn't fit all," said Edge Board President Brody Stapel. "We need to be able to choose what makes most sense for individual farm families."

He also liked that the bill funds programs to promote trade.

The FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative of Madison also applauded the dairy title, which includes other key reforms to federal dairy policy.

"The 2018 Farm Bill continues to provide funding for trade promotion, which has proven to be effective in establishing export markets," said General Manger Jeff Lyon. "Land and water conservation programs are also a mainstay in the 2018 Farm Bill, supporting dairy farmers and their efforts in maintaining healthy and safe natural resources so they can continue to support the future of their farms."

The package builds on the $1.1 billion investment made in the Bipartisan Budget Act, which assisted farmers facing enormously difficult market conditions. Organic farmers were also pleased that the bill cracks down on fraudulent organic imports by creating stricter standards to ensure consumers are getting high quality, organic food from other countries.

And the farm program increases investments in rural economic development to expand high-speed Internet to more rural areas and supporting rural emergency medicine.
