Wisconsin, U.S. Cheese Production Climbed in October

The USDA reports that Wisconsin's dairy plants are still producing more cheese products on a monthly basis than they did a year earlier. The agency's latest dairy product summary notes that Wisconsin produced 269.5 million pounds of cheese in October--which was up 0.9 percent from October 2015, and 2.9 percent more than this past September. This marks the 25th consecutive month that monthly production exceeded year-to-year levels.

Nationally, about 1.03 billion pounds of cheese was produced in the United States. That was 0.5 percent more than the same month last year, and 4.8 percent greater than the previous month's production totals.

Wisconsin's production of American cheese decreased as the state produced 76.4 million pounds, about 1.1 percent less than last year, but 7.7 percent above last month's production. Cheddar output rose by 2.3 percent compared to 2015 to total 51.2 million pounds, and rose 8.0 percent from the month earlier. Italian cheese was at 136.6 million pounds, about 3.0 percent above last year, but 1.6 percent lower for the month. And Mozzarella produced in Wisconsin totaled 89.1 million pounds--about 1.4 percent less than October 2015, and down 3.6 percent compared to September 2016.

Dry Whey output in Wisconsin was recorded at 25.9 million pounds, which was up 4.2 percent from last year, and 5.8 percent more than last month.
