Hoard's Dairyman Unveils Book of Dave Dickson Christmas Poems

For more than a quarter century, former University of Wisconsin-Madison dairy coach Dr. David Dickson wrote a dairy-related poem during the holiday season each year. And now those writings are available in a book being published by Hoard's Dairyman magazine.

The tradition started when Dr. Dave penned 'Bessy the bossy writes to Santa Claus,' which aired over the radio on The Larry Meiller Show in 1968. It was such a hit that reprints were made and distributed across the country and world.

The new book, which is titled Christmas in Dairyland, includes 27 of Dickson's poems along with fresh illustrations created by Matti Powers, a local artist who grew up on a hobby farm just outside of Clinton, Wisconsin.

Dickson was a passionate teacher and successful dairy judging coach, who's teams earned seven national championships at the National Intercollegiate Cattle Judging Contest and celebrated 18 team reasons titles.

Dr. Dave passed away in 2010 after a courageous battle against cancer. Hoard's Dairyman is donating a portion of the book's proceeds to the David P. Dickson Foundation in support of hands-on educational opportunities for dairy youth.
