State, National Cheese Output Up in October

Wisconsin's total cheese production for October was higher compared to year-ago levels. The USDA reports that the state's dairy plants produced 234.7 million pounds of cheese during the month--which was up 5.3 percent from this time last year, and 2.3 percent more compared to September 2012.

Nationally, 928 million pounds of cheese was produced--up 3.2 percent from October 2011, and 4.8 percent above the previous month's production totals.

Wisconsin's production of American cheese increased as the state produced 69.1 million pounds, about 5.5 percent more than last year, and 6.4 percent above last month's production. Cheddar output rose by 2.4 percent compared to 2011 to total 46.9 million pounds, and was 7.5 percent higher than the month earlier. Italian production was at 117.9 million pounds, up 2.4 percent above last year, but unchanged for the month. And Mozzarella cheese in Wisconsin totaled 78.7 million pounds--3.5 percent more than October 2011, but 1.9 percent below September 2012.

Dry Whey output in Wisconsin was recorded at 22.8 million pounds, which was up 2.9 percent from last year, and 4.2 percent more than last month.
