School for Beginning Market Growers Slated for January
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 12/12/2016

The Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is holding its annual School for Beginning Market Growers early next year. The three-day workshop is for anyone wanting to start a fresh market vegetable farm and will be offered January 6-7 on the UW-Madison campus.

"We provide information and inspiration to help new growers make smart business decisions about production, marketing, pricing, capitalization and labor," says John Hendrickson, the school's coordinators. "Our course is largely taught by a team of experienced growers who provide a wealth of practical knowledge and insight into what it takes to operate a farm business."

The program emphasizes organic production methods and direct marketing. Participants will learn about managing fertility and pests, using greenhouses, extending the season, equipment needs, planning and budgeting. The courses are taught by experienced growers and UW-Madison faculty and staff.

Registration for the program costs $325. Enrollment is limited, so early sign-ups are advised. For more information, call 608-265-3704 or visit the CIAS website at: www.cias.wisc.edu.

The program, now in its 20th year, serves new and beginning farmers seeking to grow and market fresh produce.
