January Milk Prices Off to a Good Start in 2013

Wisconsin's January milk price is expected to average $20.30 per hundredweight. If realized, that would be about $1.00 less than December's price, but 80 cents more than the same time a year ago. According to the USDA, the expected U.S. milk price for January is $20.00 per cwt.--90 cents below
December's price and 30 cents less than Wisconsin's price. All of the major milk producing states are predicting a price decrease from December to January, with Pennsylvania anticipating the largest decline in price, falling $1.50 to $21.20 per cwt. Michigan is expected to decrease $1.20, while Minnesota is
anticipating a 90 cent decline.
The latest numbers from the National Ag Statistics Service says California is predicted to have the lowest price in the nation at $18.40 per cwt.
Meanwhile, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange 40-pound block cheese price closed at $1.64 per pound on January 31, while barrels were $1.53 per pound. The CME butter price was $1.55 per pound.
For the week ending January 26, the NASS weekly 40-pound block cheese price averaged $1.73 per pound, and 500 pound barrels adjusted to 38 percent moisture averaged $1.70 per pound. The U.S. butter price was $1.50 pound.
The Agricultural Marketing Service Class III price for January is $18.14 per cwt.
