Wisconsin Ag Connection - 12/13/2017

The elementary teacher who's class came up with the idea of designating cheese as the official state dairy product has been honored with the Outstanding Teacher Award by the Wisconsin Farm Bureau's Ag in the Classroom program. Livia Doyle, a fourth-grade teacher at Mineral Point Elementary School, was recognizes for educating students about the importance of agriculture.

During June Dairy Month, Governor Scott Walker signed the bill that added cheese to the list of other state symbols. Ms. Doyle's students pitched the concept to local lawmakers earlier in the year, which got them an invitation to testify in favor of the idea at an official committee hearing at the State Capitol.

"Livia is everything you could ask for in a teacher and educator," said Ag in the Classroom Coordinator Darlene Arneson. "She lives and breathes agriculture and incorporates it when she can in her classroom and in everyday life."

Doyle earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville with a minor in early childhood, inclusion and Spanish. She also received a master's degree in elementary education.

She will receive $500 to attend the 2018 National Ag in the Classroom Conference in Portland, Maine, where she will compete as Wisconsin's nominee for the National Excellence in Teaching Agriculture Award.
