Pepin Co. to Discontinue Annual Fair After 140 Years
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 12/14/2017

Members of the fair board in Pepin County have made the decision to end their annual summer event due to a lack of volunteers and lower turn out from the public and youth exhibitors. In a letter sent out by the board this month, the group said the decision was made after surveying 4-H families this fall to gather input on how those most involved would like to see things proceed.

"After careful consideration, much discussion, and perhaps a few tears, the Pepin County Fair Association, Inc., and Pepin County UW-Extension have decided that the 140th Pepin County Fair, held this past July, was the last," the memo stated. "A majority indicated they'd like to see the fair combine with another county, which also aided in the decision to discontinue the Pepin County Fair."

Officials from the PCFAI and UW-Extension say they believe it is in the best interest of the youth to give them an option to participate in a larger fair setting with more learning opportunities.

PCFAI Chairwoman Christina Hager says she is sad to see the annual fair in Arkansaw come to an end, but believes Pepin County 4-H will continue on. Youth in the county have already been invited to participate in activities at the Buffalo County Fair, starting in 2018.

"Open Class exhibitors are encouraged to continue to share their talents at any of the many wonderful neighboring county fairs," Hager said. "Those who still wish to volunteer their time will surely also be welcomed by any of the neighboring counties."

The Pepin County Fair has been held every year since 1877.
