Top Winter Wheat, Oat Producing Counties of 2017 Determined

New estimates from the USDA give us an indication of what counties produced the most winter wheat and oat crops during the past growing season. The agency says Manitowoc County was the largest winter wheat producing county in Wisconsin in 2017 with about 787,000 bushels. Dand and Fond du Lac were second and third this year; with east central Wisconsin being the largest wheat producing district.

Dane County was also the highest yielding county at 83.2 bushels per acre. Rock and Iowa Counties had the next two highest yields at 80.7 and 78.9 bushels, respectively. PortageCounty had the lowest yield at 42 bushels per acre.

Juneau County had the greatest increase in yield with a 13.5 bushels per acre jump from the previous growing season. Calumet was the county with the largest drop in yield after falling 27.3 bushels per acre.

In 2017, Langlade County was the largest oat-producing county with 677,000 bushels. Iowa County was second with 201,000 bushels produced.

Sheboygan, Kewaunee and Langlade Counties tied for the highest yield in the state with 74.7 bushels per acre. Door County also recorded an average yield over 70.0 bushels per acre with 70.3.
