Major agribusiness investments approved in Wisconsin

The Wisconsin State Assembly has passed three key bills aimed at bolstering the state's agricultural economy and improving food access. These measures address soybean and potato processing, alongside affordability of fresh produce for low-income families.

"These bills strengthen Wisconsin agriculture by expanding markets and promoting healthy local food options," said WFBF President Brad Olson.

Soybean Processing Boost:

Senate Bill 787 supports a $700 million soybean processing facility in Evansville, Rock County. This facility, built by Minnesota-based CHS, will process 70 million bushels annually, increasing farm profits and creating 90 jobs. Olson called it a "50% increase" for Wisconsin's soybean processing capacity.

Potato Processing Expansion:

Senate Bill 880 paves the way for a $40-50 million potato processing plant in Stevens Point by Belgian company Agristo. This facility will create 150 jobs and purchase 10,000-20,000 acres of potatoes from Wisconsin farmers yearly.

Improving Food Access:

Assembly Bill 1013 establishes a "Double Dollars" program, incentivizing SNAP recipients to purchase local produce. This program doubles the value of SNAP benefits used for fruits and vegetables at farmers markets or grocery stores, increasing access to healthy options.

Assembly Bill 1013 now heads to the Senate, while Senate Bills 787 and 880 await Governor Evers' signature. These legislative actions demonstrate Wisconsin's commitment to supporting its agricultural sector and ensuring food security for all residents.
