Watchdog Group Accuses UW-Madison of Animal Cruelty
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 12/16/2014

A national research watchdog organization is asking the Dane County District Attorney to file criminal charges against the University of Wisconsin-Madison for violating the state's animal cruelty laws.

In a letter to DA Ismael R. Ozanne, the Ohio-based SAEN referenced incidents reported to the National Institutes of Health by the school, in which the university 'admitted its own guilt in animal cruelty.'

Stacey Ellison, a research assistant with SAEN, claims the university met the requirements for animals cruelty under Wisconsin law.

She says instances varied from staff leaving electric fence wire surrounding a manure pit unlocked, which led to the drowning of two cows, to another cow being euthanized due to severe injuries caused by the auger channel in the automatic manure handling system. Most of the other violations involved caged monkeys that were able to escape their separate partitions and hurt each other.
