November Milk Production Up in Wisconsin, U.S.
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 12/20/2010

The majority of the nation's dairy producers continued to ship more milk from their operations in November compared to the same time a year ago. The USDA announced that total production for the 23 major dairy states last month rose by 3.1 percent from 2009 at 14.4 billion pounds. That figure was lower, however, than October's production of 14.8 billion.

Wisconsin dairy farmers produced 2.06 billion pounds of milk in November--up 0.5 percent above last year, but less than October's 2.12 billion pounds. California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.27 billion pounds. Arizona had the highest percent-increase for the month as that state putout 336 million pounds, up 8.7 percent from year-ago totals.

The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.37 million head, 57,000 head more than November 2009, but unchanged from October 2010. Wisconsin was milking about 1.26 million head of dairy cattle during the month, with total production averaging 1,630 pounds per cow for the month--which was about the same as last year's average for November. The national per-cow average was up 41 pound at 1,722 pounds per animal.
