Record Number of Hens Boost Total Egg Output

Wisconsin egg production totaled 157 million eggs during November. That was up four percent from last month and 12 percent more than the same time last year, according to the latest USDA Chickens and Eggs report.

The average number of all layers during the month was 6.82 million--a record high for November, which beat last year's hen count by 21 percent. Eggs per 100 layers were 2,297, up two percent from last month, but eight percent lower than last year.

Nationally, egg production totaled 8.72 billion during November, up slightly from last year. Production included 7.60 billion table eggs, and 1.11 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.04 billion were broiler-type and 74.8 million were eggtype. The average number of layers totaled 378 million, up one percent from last year. Production per 100 layers was 2,306 eggs, down one percent from 2016.
