U.S., Wisconsin Milk Output Rose During November
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 12/20/2011

The USDA announced that total milk production for the 23 major dairy states last month rose by 2.2 percent from 2010 at 14.7 billion pounds. That figure was lower, however, than October's production of 15.2 billion--mainly because November only has 30 days on the calendar.

Wisconsin produced 2.09 billion pounds of milk in November--up 1.7 percent above last year, but less than October's 2.16 billion pounds. California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.34 billion pounds. Texas had the highest percent-increase for the month as that state put out 8.4 percent more milk than last year at 787 million pounds.

Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.48 million head, 108,000 head more than November 2010, but unchanged from October 2011. Wisconsin was milking about 1.26 million head of dairy cattle during the month, with total production averaging 1,738 pounds per cow for the month, which was about 16 pounds more than last year's average for November. The national per-cow average was up 16 pound at 1,738 pounds per animal.
