UW-Extension Beef Cattle Specialist Candidates Named
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 12/30/2008

Three individuals have been selected to interview for the vacant University of Wisconsin-Extention Beef Cattle Specialist position. The candidates will also give public presentations in three locations around the state.

The job, which is part of the Department of Animal Sciences at UW-Madison, has been open for approximately six months since the departure of Dr. Jeff Lehmkuhler to the University of Kentucky in June 2008. Due to the state budget crisis, searches for many open positions have been suspended or dropped. However, UW-Extension Cooperative Extension and the UW-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences have given this position a very high priority, and the search has been allowed to continue.

The candidates include:

** Jamie Larson - grew up on a diversified farming operation (corn, soybeans, beef cattle, and swine) near Story City, Iowa. She received her B.S. degree in Animal Science from Iowa State University, her M.S. degree from University of Minnesota, and is completing her Ph.D. in reproductive physiology at the University of Minnesota. During her Ph.D. program, she took a year off to fill an interim regional Extension educator position in Minnesota where she worked primarily on beef cattle activities. Jamie will interview on January 11 to 13 and will give a public presentation to beef cattle producers on January 12 at 7 p.m. at the Lancaster Agricultural Research Station. For details, call 608-723-2580.

** Dan Larson - comes from a family cow-calf operation in northwestern Minnesota. He obtained his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Animal and Range Science from North Dakota State University and is completing his Ph.D. degree in nutritional and reproductive physiology at the University of Nebraska. Dan will interview on January 21 to 23 and will give a public presentation to beef cattle producers on January 22 at 7 p.m. at the Vernon County Extension Office, 318 Fairlane Dr., Suite 392, Viroqua. For more information on those presentations, call 608-637-5276.

** Amy Radunz - grew up on a farm in central Minnesota. She obtained her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Animal and Range Science from North Dakota State University and is completing her Ph.D. degree in ruminant nutrition and meat science at Ohio State University (OSU). Between the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, she was employed as a Beef Cattle Extension Associate at OSU and coordinated Ohio's participation in a Five-State Beef Initiative and then served as the Manager of the Cattle Feeding and Reproduction Laboratory at Washington State University. While completing her Ph.D. at OSU, she serves as a Program Specialist in meat science and youth development. Amy will interview on February 2 to 4 and will give a public presentation to beef cattle producers on February 3 at 7 p.m. at the Pippin Center in Melville Hall, UW-Richland campus, Richland Center.
