Farm Transfer & Beginning Farmer Financing Workshop Planned

The University of Wisconsin-Extension and AgStar Financial Services are sponsoring a Farm Transfer & Beginning Farmer Financing workshop next month in Menomonie. The event takes place March 8 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Dunn County Judicial Center.

Speakers and topics will include Phil Harris, Farm Law Specialist with the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at UW-Madison, who will talk about updates regarding the 2010 Tax Relief Act and other tax code changes. Katie Sternweis, Dunn County Agricultural Agent, will discuss the steps necessary to developing a plan for a farm transfer and various farm business arrangements that could be used for a farm transfer. Josh Rynes, Dunn County Farm Service Agency Farm Loan Officer, will provide information on Beginning Farmers and Ranchers loans and Lori Mueller, AgStar Financial Services Senior Financial Services Officer, will provide information on AgStar's Young Beginning Farmers loan programs.

The cost to attend is $10.00 per person and includes materials and lunch. The workshop is designed to assist farm families in beginning their farm business transfer plan to the next generation.

Participants will be introduced to liability and tax implications with various business arrangements, updates on the 2010 Tax Relief Act and potential financing options for beginning farmers.
