Wisconsin near grant for rural clean energy
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 03/13/2024

Wisconsin is a step closer to securing federal funding for clean energy initiatives in rural areas. The U.S. Department of Energy selected the state's proposal for further negotiations, making it one of 17 finalists in the Energy Improvement in Rural or Remote Areas program.

Governor Tony Evers hailed this development as a sign of Wisconsin's commitment to a sustainable future. "Investing in clean energy creates jobs and strengthens rural communities," he said, applauding the collaborative effort that led to this recognition.

The proposed "Resilience and Prosperity in Rural Northern Wisconsin" program targets 28 rural communities across the state. It aims to serve as a model for boosting clean energy access, improving energy resilience, and creating green jobs.

The program envisions partnerships with utilities and renewable energy companies to install microgrids in Bayfield County and tribal lands. Additionally, plans include deploying solar power, battery storage systems, and smart controls to facilitate electric vehicle charging stations.

Beyond infrastructure development, the program prioritizes education and community engagement. It will provide clean energy education to residents and create opportunities for public participation. The initiative also includes a shift towards cleaner fuels by converting heavy-duty snowplows from diesel to compressed natural gas.

"This grant has the potential to make Wisconsin's rural communities leaders in sustainable energy solutions," said Missy Hughes, Secretary and CEO of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation. The program particularly focuses on the northernmost region, including the Red Cliff Reservation and Bayfield County, which are vulnerable to climate change impacts.

Wisconsin's progress in the Department of Energy program signifies a potential turning point for clean energy access and development in the state's rural areas.
