Anti-CAFO Group Plans to Protest DBA Event
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 02/19/2013

A Kewaunee County environmental group says it is planning a protest of the Dairy Business Association's annual symposium on dairy expansion in Green Bay on Tuesday as a way to express their feelings against larger farm operations.

According to the Kewaunee County Star-News, Kewaunee CARES, which stands for 'Citizens Advocating Responsible Environmental Stewardship,' issued a news release last week indicating that its members will gather outside the KI Center to protest any further dairy expansion in Kewaunee County.

The group is concerned about concentrated animal feeding operations, or CAFOs, and the affects they have on the environment.

"Our message to the dairy industry is that further expansion in Kewaunee County is not an option," said Lynn Utesch, a small farmer and Kewaunee CARES committee member. "Already, 30 percent of private wells tested here are contaminated with nitrates and E. coli bacteria, making that water unsafe to drink ... Adding more dairy cattle to the system might be good for the bottom line of industrial dairy farms, but it's having a detrimental effect on our communities."

The release also noted that the group feels large farms damage area roads because they transport heavy equipment.
