Wisconsin Total Farm Numbers Went Down in 2017

The total number of farms in Wisconsin during 2017 was 68,500. That's down 200 operations from the year earlier, according to newly released figures from the USDA.

The largest decrease in the number of farms was found in the $1,000-$9,999 range, which fell from 30,400 in 2016 to 20,200 this past year. But the largest farm category, which are operations that did over a million dollars in business, went up by 100 to 2,500.

Total land in farms in Wisconsin was 14.3 million acres, a decrease of about 100,000 acres from a year earlier.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin's average farm size remained consistent over the past five years at 209 acres. The average farm size for those in the $1,000,000 and over economic sales class was 1,400 acres.

The number of farms in the United States for 2017 is estimated at 2.07 million, down 18,000 from 2016. Total land in farms, at 910 million acres, decreased by about a million acres from the previous year. The average farm size in the U.S. is 444 acres, up slightly from 12 months earlier.
