Assembly Okays 'Junk Food' Bill
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 02/19/2018

State lawmakers are once again considering legislation that would prohibit food stamps recipients from using their FoodShare benefits to purchase junk food. Last week, the Assembly approved the measure on a voice vote.

Specifically, the bill would require the state to identify food products that lack nutritional value and then add them to a list of items that would not be available for purchase with food stamps.

The State Senate would need to approve the proposal before sending it to Governor Scott Walker for consideration.

A similar proposal in the past would have required that at least two-thirds of FoodShare purchases be staple foods like meat, pork, chicken, fish, fruits, and vegetables.
