Marathon, Grant Counties Top State 4-H Meats Contest

A team from Marathon County took top honors in the senior division of the state 4-H meats contest. The event was held last weekend at University of Wisconsin-Madison Meat Laboratory, where team members Stephanie Witberler, Emilie Pauls, Kailen Smerchek and Cortney Zimmerman scored the highest points in the competition. Mark Zimmerman coached the group. They will represent Wisconsin at the National 4-H Meats Judging Contest to be held this fall in Kansas City.

The second place senior team, which will advance to a contest in Denver, Colorado, was from Dodge County. Members of that team included Natalie Siedschlag, Morgan Wollin, Riley Kappell and Kaytlynn Meyer. Christine Siedschlag coached that group.

The top junior team this year was from Grant County. Team members were Jessica Patterson, Avery Crooks, Luke Patterson, Abby Meier and Alayna Barth, with Dennis Patterson serving as coach. The second place junior team was also from Jefferson County. Student participants were Hanna Brattlie, Drew Dettmann, Mackenzie Thom, Rylee Brattlie. The team was coached by Lindsey Knoebel.

The contest consisted of evaluating classes of hams, beef, pork and lamb carcasses, and two retail cut classes. Youth also identified retail cuts of beef, pork or lamb and graded beef carcasses.
