Building Commission Okays Funding for Dairy Research Project
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 02/28/2020

Nearly two years after the Wisconsin State Building Commission approved plans to overhaul the Center for Dairy Research and Babcock Hall Dairy Plant at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the panel has voted to boost its levels of funding to nearly $26 million. Much of that support will come from UW-Madison, additional borrowing and private donations.

Built in the 1950s, the school's dairy facilities are in need of major upgrades. The original estimate for the project was $32 million, but coordinators now say it will take about $72.6 million to do the proper renovations and stock the center with state-of-the-art equipment.

"Industry donors were proud to contribute $18.5 million to the building project at its start, and they're contributing once again, because the center plays an essential and inimitable role in dairy processing research, business development and training," said John Umhoefer of the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association. "This additional money will ensure the renovated and expanded facility will meet industry needs now and for decades to come."

As part of the expansion, the Center for Dairy Research will get a new auditorium that can seat about 100 students. Other labs and kitchens located next to the auditorium will also be constructed.

Similar renovations are also being made at the Dairy Pilot Plant at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
