Assembly Committee Approves 70 MPH Speed Limit
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 03/04/2015

Wisconsin motorists could soon get the green light to drive a little faster on certain highways. On Tuesday, the Assembly Committee on Transportation voted in favor of increasing the maximum speed limit to 70 miles per hour.

The panel rejected an amendment that would have allowed the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to establish a 65 mph limit for commercial vehicles.

"This is a common sense bill that Democrats and Republicans support," said Rep. Paul Tittl of Manitowoc, who authored the bill. "Highways are safer when traffic is flowing at the same speed. Split speeds for commercial vehicles disrupt that flow."

Tittl claims that traffic safety engineers say the safest place to set the speed limit is the point at which 85 percent of the people are driving at or below.

The committee votes was 14-1 in favor of the higher speed limit. The measure will head to the Assembly floor later this month.
