Breeders, Students Honored During State Holstein Convention

It was another successful year for the Wisconsin Holstein Association. During the group's annual convention in Tomah last weekend, Ryan and Traci Weigel of Platteville and Ryan and Brandi Kamps from Belmont, who are in partnership with each other at KHW Genetics, were named Younger Dairy Persons of the Year. Honored with the WHA Distinguished Service award was long-time WHA employee Christianne Williams of Baraboo. And the 2014 Distinguished Breeder honorees were Robert and Karyn Schuaf from Barron.

This year's Wall of Fame inductees were Marlowe Nelson, the cow 'Snow-N-Denises Dellia,' bred by Robert Snow of Sparta, and the bull 'Regancrest Elton Durham,' bred by the Regan family of Waukon, IA.

The 2013 Wisconsin Top Performer herds were announced. They include Tom Kestell, Waldo; Siemers Holsteins, Newton; Allan & Susan Lundberg, Osseo; Kellercrest Registered Holsteins, Mount Horeb; and Jeff and Kate Hendrickson, Belleville. Receiving the overall Top Performer was Kellercrest Holsteins with Kellercrest Shottle Loni-ET, EX-92 GMD DOM, with a record at 6-09 3x 305d 49,163M 5.3 2605F 2.84 1397P lbs. Also recognized were owners of cows that have produced 300,000 and 400,000 pounds of lifetime milk.

Winners of the Young Adult Educational Scholarship award this year were Brandon and Shianne Ferry of Hilbert.

Meanwhile, the Wisconsin Holstein Futures sale averaged over $4,800 on 33 lots that included choices from some of the area's most prominent cow families. The high seller was a cow consigned by Charles, Eric and Brandy Westphal of Brownsville. She was purchased by Al & Cathy Silverthorn and Joe & Kathy Hughes from Omro for $12,000.

This year's officers of the association's board were elected. They include President Chris McCullough, Juda; Vice President Paula Bovre, Fond du Lac; and Secretary Marci Walker, Wisconsin Dells. Matt Lippert, Pittsville, and Kevin Jorgensen, Waupun, are also serving as Executive Committee members.

And Kent Wendorf, Viroqua; Dan Cnossen, Hatley; Tracy Nelson, Ellsworth; and Chad Ryan, Fond du Lac were all re-elected to additional terms on the WHA board.
