Ohio Company Makes First Offer on Golden Guernsey Plant
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 03/05/2013

A dairy products company from Ohio is the first to come forward with an offer to purchase the Golden Guernsey Dairy property in Waukesha. Superior Dairy Co. has placed a $5.5 million bid on the bankrupt facility, but does not want to be tied to the former labor contract that Golden Guernsey employees were working under prior to its closing in January.

The trustee for the plant says there were 25 parties interested in the property. Though Superior Dairy has come forward with an offer, bids will continue to be accepted through May 10. If more than one qualified bid is received, a public auction would then be scheduled.

Superior Dairy is owned by LEL Operations Co. and is a major dairy product supplier for Costco stores. The company has already put down a $500,000 deposit along with its bid, which includes all of the equipment, inventory and intellectual property.

Golden Guernsey was purchased by a group of Los Angeles investors in September 2011 when Dean Foods was ordered to sell the division after losing an anti-trust settlement.

The plant manufactured and bottled dairy products, distributing them to schools, grocery stores, convenience stores and major retailers in Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin.
