McGuirk to be Honored as WDE's Dairy Industry Person of Year
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 03/12/2012

The 2012 honoree of World Dairy Expo's Dairy Industry Person of the Year Award comes from the Dairy State. Dr. Sheila McGuirk, a professor of medical sciences with the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, will be recognized at the show for her dedication to the industry. The award is one of four top honors that World Dairy Expo presents annually.

Dr. McGuirk teaches responsibilities for cardiac diseases in horses and cattle, as well as respiratory diseases in larger animals. She also coordinates the school's ambulatory clinical rotation program.

Sheila completed a bachelor's degree at Cornell University and her veterinary degree at Georgia. She went on to receive her masters and PhD from Ohio State University. She was one of the original faculty members of Madison's veterinary school and helped make the decisions that shaped the climate and culture of the program. She has lectured and taught clinical medicine to thousands of students and authored many research publications and abstracts.

In 2000, the UW-School of Veterinary Medicine honored her as its Veterinarian of the Year for her contributions toward the advancement of the veterinary medical profession.

Other top individuals to be honored at WDE include John Fiscalini, Modesto, California, Dairyman of the Year; Mary Shank Creek, Hagerstown, Maryland, Dairy Woman of the Year; and Dr. Abelardo Martinez, who is editor and publisher of Hoard's Dairyman en Español, Tlalnepantla, Mexico, International Person of the Year.

The four recipients will be honored during World Dairy Expo at a special banquet held on October 3.
