Schauf, Nordlund Among 2013 World Dairy Expo Honorees
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 03/19/2013

Two of the top four honors presented annually by World Dairy Expo are going to Wisconsinites in 2013. On Monday, the Madison dairy show announced that Karyn Schauf of Indianhead Holsteins, Ltd. in Barron will be this year's Dairy Woman of the Year; and Dr. Ken Nordlund, DVM, with the University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Veterinary Medicine, is the Dairy Industry Person of the Year.

Schauf and her husband, Bob, own a widely recognized herd of registered Holsteins. Indianhead Holsteins LTD raises and shows purebred cattle and exports embryos to 17 nations. Their business won the Wisconsin Export Award in 2008. They also operate Indianhead Shavings, a livestock bedding business that distributes product to various farms throughout Northwestern Wisconsin.

Karyn is the president of the Barron County Farm Bureau and also serves as a member of the UW-Barron County Campus Foundation Board of Directors and the Pregnancy Help Center Board. She is a former Wisconsin Alice in Dairyland and the couple earned the state's Outstanding Young Farmer Award in 1986 and the U.S. Jaycees National Outstanding Farmer Award in 1987.

Dr. Nordlund is a clinical professor in the food animal production medicine group at the UW-School of Veterinary Medicine. He received his veterinary degree from the University of Minnesota in 1977 and was a private practitioner and practice owner in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, from 1977 to 1989. He is a board-certified dairy specialist in the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners.

In 1989, Dr. Nordlund joined the University of Wisconsin and helped to found the food animal production medicine program. His research interests include dairy record systems including development of the Transition Cow Index and interactions between dairy cattle housing and health.

Other top individuals to be honored at WDE include Velmar Green, Green Meadow Farms, Elsie, Michigan, Dairyman of the Year; and Pedro Hugo Testa, Reproductores S.R.L. of Buenos Aires, Argentina, International Person of the Year.

The four recipients will be honored during World Dairy Expo at a special banquet in October.
