Both Legislative Ag Chairs, Nerison & Moulton, Plan to Retire
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 03/20/2018

The top agricultural committee members for both chambers of the state Legislature announced on the same day that they plan to retire at the end of the year. Assembly Ag Committee Chair Rep. Lee Nerison from Westby and Sen. Terry Moulton of Chippewa Falls released individual statements Monday stating they do not plan to run for re-election in 2018.

Nerison has represented the 96th Assembly District since 2005, and was first elected as ag committee chair seven years ago. He is a former dairy producer and has operated his family farm in western Wisconsin for over 40 years.

"I remember stopping by the State Capitol as a kid with my family on the way back from a Milwaukee Braves game. I keep the family picture we took that day in my Capitol office to remind me as a legislator of what a privilege it is to serve in the legislature," Rep. Nerison said in a statement. "I never dreamed I would end up here, but it has been such an honor to work and serve with somany great people."

While serving in the legislature, Nerison has received numerous awards related to conservation, agriculture, the dairy industry and veterans' issues.

Meanwhile, Moulton was first elected to the senate in 2010 after serving as the District 68 assembly representative from 2004 to 2008. He has led the Senate's agriculture panel since 2013.

"I am officially announcing that I will not seek a third term in the senate and will be retiring from the legislature when my current term ends in December," Moulton said. "When I began my campaign for the senate, eight years ago this month, my goals were to work for smaller government, reduced tax burden, and a better climate for jobs in Wisconsin. We have accomplished all this and more. Income and property taxes are lower, more people are working than ever before, and unemployment is at a 17 year low."

He added that making the decision not to run again was difficult, but looks forward to serving the community in new ways in the future.

Both Republican lawmakers said they plan to spend more time with their families after wrapping up their careers in public service.
