State Farmers Intend to Plant Record Soybean Acreage in '21
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 04/01/2021

Wisconsin farmers are expected to plant about 4.15 million acres of corn for all purposes in 2021, which is about 150,000 acres more land than they seeded last year. The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service said in its Prospective Plantings report on Wednesday that growers intend to plant 2.25 million acres of soybeans in the Badger State--an increase of 250,000 acres more than in 2020. If realized, this will be Wisconsin's highest soybean planted acreage ever.

Winter wheat planted acreage is estimated at 260,000 acres, a 100,000 acre increase compared to last year. Oat producers are also looking to seed 200,000 acres, which is about 100,000 acres less than the previous season.

About 1.20 million acres of dry hay is expected to come off the fields this year, down 170,000 acres from last year.

The annual Prospective Plantings is based on the voluntary responses from approximately 2,100 Wisconsin producers. Actual plantings will depend upon weather, economic conditions and the availability of production inputs at the time producers must make their final planting decisions.

Nationally, corn planted area for all purposes in 2021 is estimated at 91.1 million acres, up nearly one percent from last year. Soybean acreage is estimated at 87.6 million acres, which would be a five percent hike from last year. And all wheat planted area for the year ahead will be about 46.4 million acres--up five percent for the year, but still represents the fourth lowest all wheat planted area on record since records began in 1919.
