Lawmakers Making Another Attempt to Stop Food Stamp Fraud

Two state lawmakers are sponsoring legislation that aims to prevent fraud within Wisconsin's FoodShare program. Rep. Andre Jacque of De Pere and Sen. Rob Cowles from Green Bay say their bill would reimburse local governments for fraud prevention and
recovery. It would also limit the number of FoodShare replacement cards issued.
Currently, local counties are in charge of enforcing the rules when it comes to food stamp benefits, even though the funding for the program comes from the federal government. Jacque says tight budgets often mean that enforcement efforts on these types of
programs are not always the top priority for local government leaders.
Last year, state legislators took up similar measures that ensure FoodShare benefits go for providing groceries to those who need it and heightened scrutiny on cases where recipients report losing their FoodShare cards four or more times in a year.
In 2015, Wisconsin had about 836,000 people in the FoodShare program that received $1.1 billion in benefits.
