EPA Issues Approval for E15 Misfueling Plan
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 03/22/2012

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has approved a new 'Misfueling Mitigation Plan,' or MMP for use by companies that manufacture E15, a blend of 15 percent ethanol and gasoline.

The plan, which was submitted by the Renewable Fuels Association, ensures that E15 is only used in cars from model year 2001 and newer.

"Education is an important part of the approval process," says Wisconsin Bio Industry Alliance Josh Morby. "This plan will help clarify when consumers can choose E15 as a safe and economical fuel for their vehicles."

According to the National Automobile Dealers Association, in 2010 Wisconsin has more than 4.9 million passenger cars and light trucks on the road. The majority of these vehicles are model year 2001 or newer, meaning that most vehicles on the road in Wisconsin can safely use E15.

Morby says E15 is not approved for use in vehicles manufactured in model year 2000 or earlier, or in small engines, such as those found in lawnmowers.

"But these engines only represent a small fraction of the fuel use in Wisconsin," he says.

The plan provides guidelines for properly labeling pumps, transporting the fuel and participating in compliance requirements.
