Holmen Ag Teacher Honored by Farm Credit 100 Program
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 03/29/2016

Farm Credit has announced the top honorees of the 'Farm Credit 100 Fresh Perspectives' program, a nationwide search to identify and honor 100 leaders who are changing rural communities and agriculture for the better. Among those distinguished professionals were Roger King, a long-time agriculture education instructor at Holmen High School.

During his 31 years in the classroom, King has developed an outstanding program that goes beyond the basics to include the latest agricultural technologies and outside-the-classroom activities to give hands-on experience.

"Having a student enter my classroom and knowing that they are excited about agriculture and that I can play a role in development that excitement by introducing new concepts, revealing answers to unknown concepts and confirming their excitement about agriculture, inspires me," King says.

His ag program supplies food for the high school and district food service program, where students raise sweet corn, potatoes and recently added asparagus gardens. Using a grant Roger secured, students now purchase and raise chickens. In the past few years, he spearheaded the effort to transition the school's traditional green house into a hydroponics facility that raises lettuce.

Last year, King was named Wisconsin's High School Teacher of the Year. He also received a Kohl Teacher Fellowship in 2015.

The Farm Credit 100 Fresh Perspectives program is the cornerstone of Farm Credit's 100th anniversary of supporting rural communities and agriculture. The search took place between July and December 2015, and netted more than 1,000 nominations from all 50 states.
