Caterpillar to Layoff Hundreds of Milwaukee Plant Workers
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 04/01/2013
Over 250 employees of the Caterpillar manufacturing plant in South Milwaukee may be losing their jobs by early summer. The Peoria, Illinois-based company announced last week that lower than expected earnings has led to the company's decision to scale back on its heavy mining equipment production line.
Union President Kevin Jaskie says he is not sure if the layoffs will affect only union staff or both union members and management employees.
Meanwhile, Caterpillar is in the process of preparing for its first labor negotiations with the United Steelworkers Local 1343 since the South Milwaukee facility became part of the company.
The plant was acquired as part of Caterpillar's acquisition of Bucyrus International Inc. in 2011.
The facility currently employs about 800 production workers.
