Former UW-Platteville Ag Prof, Fred Oomens, Passes

A memorial mass will be held at a later date for Frederick Oomens of Platteville, who passed away last week at his home at the age of 81.

Fred joined the U.S. Navy after high school as a member of the Ellyson Helicopter Training Group. He later enrolled at Wisconsin State College and Institute of Technology at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, majoring in Agricultural Education.

He was employed at the Soil Conservation Services at Janesville and Chippewa Falls, and later held teaching positions at Bloomington and UW-Platteville. He also earned a Master's degree in Agricultural Education from University of Missouri at Columbia and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Agricultural Education from Northwest Missouri State University. After spending eight years building the Agricultural Mechanics program at NWMSU, he and his family returned to southwest Wisconsin where Fred was a professor at UW-Platteville until his retirement in 2000.

During his teaching years, he also served as an advisor to the Alpha Gamma Rho organization as well as president of Platteville High School Sports Boosters Club.
