USDA Releases 2014 Crop Production Totals for Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service has posted its annual crop summary from the 2014 growing year. The figures, which were provided from the USDA, show that Wisconsin farmers harvested about 485 million bushels of corn for grain this past year. This estimate is down two percent from the November 1
forecast, but up 10 percent from 2013. Yield is estimated at 156 bushels per acre, six bushels less than the November estimate, but 11 bushels above 2013. Area harvested for grain is estimated at 3.11 million acres, up 40,000 acres from the November 1 forecast and 80,000 acres above 2013. Corn planted for
all purposes was about four million acres, down 100,000 from the November estimate and 100,000 acres below 2013.
Corn for silage production is estimated at 15.7 million tons, down three percent from 2013. The silage yield estimate of 18.5 tons per acre is 2.0 tons per acre higher than 2013. Producers harvested 850,000 acres of corn for silage, a decrease of 130,000 acres from 2013.
Soybean production is estimated at 78.8 million bushels in 2014, up slightly from the November 1 forecast, but 30 percent above 2013. Growers averaged 44.0 bushels per acre in 2014. This is unchanged from the November 1 forecast, but 5 bushels above the 2013 yield. The harvested acreage of 1.79 million is
up 10,000 from the November estimate and 240,000 acres above 2013. Soybean planted acreage, at 1.80 million acres, is up 14 percent from 2013.
All hay production for the state is estimated at 4.87 million tons, up 29 percent from the 3.76 million tons produced in 2013. Producers averaged 2.97 tons per acre, up from 2.35 tons in 2013. All hay harvested acres is estimated at 1.64 million acres, up 40,000 acres from 2013. Alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures
production is estimated at 4.13 million tons, up 44 percent from 2013. Producers averaged 3.3 tons per acre, 0.7 ton above the 2013 yield. Harvested acres, at 1.25 million, were up 150,000 acres from 2013. Wisconsin producers seeded 450,000 acres of alfalfa in 2014, down 10,000 from the previous year.
Other hay production is estimated at 741,000 tons, 18 percent below 2013. Producers averaged 1.9 tons per acre, up from 1.8 tons per acre in 2013. Harvested acres of other hay, at 390,000, is down 110,000 acres from the previous year.
Potato production for 2014 is estimated at 27.1 million cwt, up 4 percent from 2013. Yield is estimated at 430 cwt, up 10 cwt from 2013. Planted and harvested acres are estimated at 64,000 acres and 63,000 acres, respectively.
And dry edible bean production is estimated at a record 196,000 cwt. The yield is estimated at a record 2,480 pounds per acre. Area harvested, at 7,900 acres, is 2,500 acres more than 2013 and is the largest harvested acreage since 2000.
