Wisconsin Farmers May Plant Record Soybean Acreage in 2015

Wisconsin farmers are planning to plant 4.10 million acres of corn for all purposes in 2015, which is about three percent more than they seeded last year. But the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service said in its Prospective Plantings report this week that growers intend to plant 1.85 million acres of soybeans, also a three percent increase from 2014. If realized, this will be Wisconsin's highest soybean planted acreage on record.

Winter wheat planted acreage is estimated at 245,000 acres, a drop of 17 percent from last year. Oat producers are looking to seed 275,000 acres, up 20,000 acres over 2014.

Planting intentions of Wisconsin barley farmers for 2015 are down 2,000 acres from 2014 at 24,000 acres.

About 1.60 million acres of dry hay is expected to come off the fields this year, down two percent from the previous season.

The annual Prospective Plantings is based on the voluntary responses from approximately 1,500 Wisconsin producers. Actual plantings will depend upon weather, economic conditions and the availability of production inputs at the time producers must make their final planting decisions.

Nationally, corn planted area for all purposes in 2015 is estimated at 89.2 million acres, down two percent from last year. If realized, this will be the third consecutive year of an acreage decline and would be the lowest planted acreage in the United States since 2010. Soybean planted area for 2015 is estimated at a record high 84.6 million acres, up 1 percent from last year.
