Rep. Kind Recommends Assistance for Paying Farmland Rent
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 04/07/2020

As many lawmakers and farm groups are asking the USDA to help struggling dairy farmers by purchasing surplus products, one Wisconsin congressman is also urging the federal government to help producers cover the cost of land rent.

In a letter to Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin on Monday, Rep. Ron Kind of La Crosse asked for immediate clarity for farmers' eligibility for the paycheck protection program.

"Just like other small businesses who need to pay their rent for their facilities, farmers who rent land need to pay their bills to keep their operations running," Kind said. "The Treasury needs to take immediate action to ensure lenders know that agriculture is fully eligible for these programs."

PPP was created as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which was signed by President Trump in late March.

Kind says nearly 40 percent of the nation's farmland is rented. Without immediate assistance, he feels small farmers who rent land to farm may be forced to end production.
