Wisconsin Ag Connection - 04/01/2009

A group of students from the University of Wisconsin-Madison were among four teams in the nation to achieve "First Place Platinum" during the eighth annual North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge held in Syracuse, New York last weekend. The UW-Madison team--which included Laura Bahn, Berlin; Patrick Kusilek, Baldwin; Phil Monson, Brodhead; and Annette Zwald, Hammond--received $200 scholarships for each participant. They were coached by Dr. Dave Combs.

Teams from the University of Minnesota, Purdue University and Ohio State University also earned the Platinum award.

Meanwhile, the UW-River Falls team earned a Second Place Platinum ranking. Their team was made up of Jillian Becker, Turtle Lake; Michael Johnson, Fountain, Minnesota; Sam Kreidermacher, Rollingstone, Minnesota.; and Brianna Pfluger, Green Bay. Dr. Dennis Cooper was their coach.

And UW-Platteville received a gold ranking during the event.

Organized by the Northeast Regional Dairy Challenge committee, NAIDC 2009 attracted teams from 31 universities located across the United States and Canada. Each team of four was challenged to put their textbook and practical knowledge to the ultimate test of analyzing dairies. The contest started with a walk-through at one of the four host dairies, followed by the opportunity to ask questions of the owners and analyze farm-specific data. Teams then used this information and their observations to develop management recommendations, and then presented their recommendations to the herd owners and a panel of five dairy industry judges.
