First Crop/Weather Summary of 2013 Has Little to Report
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 04/09/2013
The Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service has released its first crop/weather report of the year as scheduled, but it appears Mother Nature didn't consult the same calendar.
The only item in the weekly summary with any significant progress was manure hauling, which was still mostly inactive until more snow is melted. Spring tillage has not begun yet in any of the state's 72 counties.
Average highs in the Badger State during the past week were in the 40s with minimal precipitation. Nighttime temperatures dipped into the teens and twenties in northern Wisconsin, where snowcover reportedly remained up to a foot or more deep in fields and woods.
Crop reporters do note that alfalfa remained dormant and that it was too early to tell how much winterkill has occurred. Winter wheat was just beginning to green up in far southern Wisconsin.
The maple syrup season was ongoing, with reports of sap flow ranging from slow to excellent.
