Sen. Baldwin Wants Support for Cranberry Growers, Too
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 04/16/2020

With all the coverage the dairy industry is getting because of the effects brought on by the Coronavirus, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin is reminding the U.S. Department of Agriculture that Wisconsin cranberry growers are also in need of financial assistance. As co-chair of the Congressional Cranberry Caucus, Baldwin is asking Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue to make purchases of surplus cranberry products.

The Madison Democrat says the move would provide nutritious products to families in need by utilizing tools provided to USDA in the bipartisan CARES Act.

"Affecting cranberry growers from coast-to-coast, the sudden and unpredictable closure of food-service businesses combined with government-issued stay-at-home orders have heightened the stress of an already challenging business environment," she wrote in a letter to the secretary. "The growing season is now upon us, and some seasonal farm workers that cranberry growers rely on were unable to return to cranberry marshes due to travel restrictions."

She added that small cranberry operations are especially hard hit because many of these families have unexpectedly lost their non-farm income, which was critical for their cash flow and health insurance.
