Brancel Hosts Dairy Processor Forum to Discuss Solutions
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 04/12/2017

In an effort to help Wisconsin dairy farmers who recently found out they are being dropped by their milk processors, State Agriculture Secretary Ben Brancel held an emergency gathering of key industry players in Madison on Tuesday to discuss any options that can be presented. According to the Wisconsin Farm Report, Governor Scott Walker also joined the group via conference call to remind them about the importance of the situation now that the Canadian Province of Ontario is no longer importing ultra-filtered milk from the United States.

In an exclusive interview with Farm Broadcaster Pam Jahnke, Brancel said he was grateful that the industry came together for the meeting--which included representatives from Grassland Dairy in Greenwood and Nasonville Dairy of Marshfield. Collectively, the two central Wisconsin processors were forced to cut nearly 100 patrons because of a sudden surplus of milk.

Brancel said the meeting did not provide immediate answers, but called the gathering 'productive and encouraging.'

Last week, Brancel and New York Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball sent a letter to the USDA asking the agency to purchase dairy products for nutritional aid programs in an effort to boost demand for the extra milk on the market.

Other state and federal lawmakers have also been weighing in on the issue. Minnesota Congressman Collin Peterson, who serves as the ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee, said he would like to see provisions included in the next farm bill to help protect small dairy producers from low commodity prices.
