Record Crop Predictions Meet Expectations in Wisconsin

As expected, it appears that Wisconsin farmers had a record year for corn yields in 2015. The USDA's Annual Crop Production Summary showed that corn for grain production in the Badger State is estimated at 492 million bushels, up one percent from 2014. Wisconsin's corn for grain yield is estimated at an all-time high of 164 bushels per acre, down slightly from earlier expectations, but still eight bushels above 2014. Area harvested for grain is estimated at 3.00 million acres, 110,000 acres below last year.

Corn for silage production came in around 18.9 million tons, up 20 percent from 2014. The silage yield estimate of 19.5 tons per acre is 1.0 ton per acre higher than 2014. Producers harvested 970,000 acres of corn for silage, an increase of 120,000 acres from 2014.

State growers harvested 92.6 million bushels of soybeans during the past growing season, which was 18 percent more than in 2014. Producers averaged 49.5 bushels per acre, 4.5 bushels above the 2014 yield. The harvested acreage of 1.87 million is up 10,000 from the November 1 estimate and 80,000 acres above last year. Planted acreage was also up from the previous season at 1.88 million acres.

All hay production for the state is estimated at 4.07 million tons, down 16 percent from the 4.87 million tons produced in 2014. Producers averaged 2.70 tons per acre, down from 2.97 tons in 2014. All hay harvested acres is estimated at 1.51 million acres, down 130,000 acres from 2014. Alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures production is estimated at 3.36 million tons, down 19 percent from 2014. Producers averaged 2.8 tons per acre, 0.5 ton below the 2014 yield. Harvested acres, at 1.20 million, were down 50,000 acres from 2014. Wisconsin producers seeded 440,000 acres of alfalfa in 2015, down 10,000 from the previous year.

And potato production for 2015 is estimated at 27.5 million cwt, up 5 percent from 2014. Yield is estimated at 440 cwt, up 30 cwt from 2014. Planted and harvested acres are estimated at 63,000 acres and 62,500 acres, respectively.
