State Trout Sales Were Down in 2018

Wisconsin fish farmers are reporting $1.47 million in trout sales during 2018, a 13 percent decrease from the previous year. According to the state's agriculture department, the value of trout distributed for restoration or conservation uses totaled $1.51 million. Sales of trout that were at least 12 inches long totaled $1.31 million, while the number of trout 12 inches or longer sold was 370,000.

The agency says producers raising trout for sale lost 235,000 fish weighing a total of 54,000 pounds to various causes during 2018. The number of trout lost was 44,000 more than last year, while the total weight of the fish lost decreased 36,000 pounds.

Nationally, the total value of trout fish sales totaled $100 million dollars. That's down 10 percent from 2017. The number of trout 12 inches and longer totaled 35.8 million fish, down 13 percent for the year. The average price per pound was $1.91, which is unchanged from the previous season.
