Crop Report: Winter Weather Continues to Halt Progress
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 04/16/2013

Another series of winter weather brought heavy rain across southern Wisconsin; with snow, sleet and freezing rain to the north. That, of course, means the 2013 growing season has not officially began yet, according to the weekly crop progress report.

The Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service noted that most fields are either highly saturated or still frozen. Topsoil moisture was estimated at 32 percent surplus, statewide. And temperatures remained below average.

Crop reporters do not know of any spring tillage taking place anywhere in the state. And even manure spreading was very light because of the soggy field conditions.

Alfalfa was greening up in a few areas, though stands remained dormant throughout most of the state.

And winter wheat was also greening up in some areas, though low temperatures and snowfall kept growth minimal.
