UW-Platteville Snowmobile Team Receives Award From WBIA
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 04/10/2008

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Clean Snowmobile Competition Team received a certificate of recognition from the Wisconsin Bio Industry Alliance on Wednesday for its outstanding contribution to Wisconsin's bio industry. The team from UW-Platteville, a chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers, has engineered a snowmobile to run on E85, a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. The team competes in annual events held by the SAE, which awards teams for design and performance.

"We're very pleased to present this award to the clean snowmobile team from UW-Platteville," said WBIA Director Joshua Morby. "By working to develop a snowmobile that can run on E85, these kids have demonstrated a real commitment to the state's bio industry."

All engines are capable of running ethanol blends of up to 10 percent ethanol, but they must be specially designed to run on higher blends like E85.

The UW-Platteville team recently won multiple awards at the 2008 SAE Clean Snowmobile Competition in March at the KRC Keweenaw Research Center in Michigan. In addition to taking third place overall, the team received awards for Best Handling, Most Improved Winner, the Hawke Safety Award, the Endurance Run Award, and the Cold Start Award.
