Another Hog CAFO May be Built in Northern Wisconsin
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 04/24/2019

An-Iowa based agricultural business is looking to construct a $20 million hog farm in northern Wisconsin that would house up to 26,000 pigs. Suidae Health and Production is in the process of applying for the necessary permits with the Department of Natural Resources for the concentrated animal feeding operation, which would be built in the town of Trade Lake in Burnett County.

The farm would be operated by Cumberland, LLC and would start with about 3,800 sows, 9,400 pigs and 50 boars. The operation would also produce approximately 6.8 million gallons of manure each year.

Area residents had an opportunity to learn about the project during a town meeting last week. Many feared the farm would make their area groundwater susceptible to contamination, while others said it would create a boost to the rural economy.

A similar battle took place just two years ago when Reicks View Farms, also based in Iowa, first unveiled their plans to build a large hog facility in Bayfield County.

Wisconsin currently has 14 hog farms large enough to be permitted as CAFOs. If approved, the Cumberland Farm would be the largest in the region.
