March Milk Production Just Barely Exceeded 2017 Levels
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 04/23/2018

Wisconsin dairy cows continued to produce more milk during the month of March than they did a year earlier--but just by a fraction. According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, state output totaled 2.599 billion pounds last month, up slightly from the 2.598 billion pounds compared to March 2017, and more than February's 2.33 billion (which had less days on the calendar).

Year-to-year production has risen 45 of the the past 46 months in Wisconsin, according to records kept by Wisconsin Ag Connection. Only May of 2017 showed a dip in the trend.

Nationally, 17.8 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 23 major dairy states for the month, which was 1.5 percent more than in 2017, and more than the previous month's 15.9 billion.

California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.59 billion pounds. Colorado had the greatest increase in year-to-year output as that state produced 379 million pounds of milk in March, up 7.4 percent from the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.74 million head, 29,000 head more than March 2017, but 2,000 head less than February 2018. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.27 million head, down 1,000 from last month and 6,000 less than last year. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,040 pounds, up 10 pounds from last year's figures.
