Final 2017 Alfalfa Hay Production Totals Posted

Farmers in southwest Wisconsin harvested the most alfalfa hay during the 2017 growing season. According to newly released figures from the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service, nearly 504,000 tons of hay was made in that district; followed by the West Central district with 478,900 tons.

Grant County produced the largest hay crop last year with 119,900, followed by Green, Manitowoc, Vernon, Iowa and Dane Counties, respectively. Pierce led the state for average yield with 4.10 tons per acre. Iowa, Grant and Waupaca rounded out the top four.

Meanwhile, the North Central district of Wisconsin was the leading region for all other hay produced with 204,500 tons. Rusk County led with 35,100 tons produced. Bayfield, Price, Vernon and Ashland rounded out the top five producing counties. The yield leader was Kenosha County at 2.55 tons per acre average.
