WI Has More Laying Hens This Year, But Not Working as Hard

Wisconsin egg production during March was 143 million eggs, up 14 percent from last month, but down fractionally from last year. According to the USDA's latest Chickens and Eggs report, the average number of all layers on hand during the past month was 5.76 million, up two percent from February 2017, and four percent more than last March.
Eggs per 100 layers for March in Wisconsin were 2,480--which is up 12 percent from last month, but down four percent from the same time in 2016.
Nationally, egg production totaled 8.97 billion during March, up four percent from last year. Production included 7.84 billion table eggs, and 1.13 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.05 billion were broiler-type and 81.9 million were egg-type. All layers in the
country totaled 375 million, up two percent from last year.
