Wisconsin Ag Connection - 05/10/2021

Wisconsin's tart cherry production in 2020 saw a nice rebound compared to the past several years when wet and cool weather devastated the crop in parts of Door County.

State agriculture officials say total output came in at 10.1 million pounds, up 11 percent from 2019 production levels. Cherry growers harvested 1,500 acres, which was down by 100 acres from the previous season.

Average yield per acre was at 6,700 pounds, up by 1,000 pounds for the year.

The overall average price also rose from 10.9 cents per pound in 2019 to 49.9 cents last year.

Processed cherries accounted for 99 percent of the state's cherry production with the value of Wisconsin's utilized tart cherry crop totaling $4.99 million in 2020.
